Philip Adams: Protest, Resistance and Conscientious Dissent

PROTEST, RESISTANCE AND CONSCIENTIOUS DISSENT: LET’S REMEMBER OUR DEBT, is a free to attend talk by Philip Adams taking place at UWTSD’s Creative Bubble, Craddock Street, Swansea on Thursday 27 September at 5.30 pm.

Welsh author Philip Adams talks about the origins of conscientious protest and the ‘five-fingered salute’. He examines protests forand protests against—votes, conscription and independence. In new research, he assesses the grounds for conscientious protest in the Swansea area.

The talk has been organised by the HigherStreet International to complement its collaborative artwork currently on display in Swansea Museum as part of the Some Things We Forgot to Remember exhibition. The exhibition curated by Jonathan Powell of Elysium Gallery & Artists Studios, see Welsh and Wales based artists responding to the Museum’s WW1 collection —investigating memory, loss and our seemingly never-ending behavioural cycle of war and destruction. The artwork Cock a Snoot–The Five-fingered Salute, created by Tom Morris and Mark Stephenson with the HigherStreet International, is partly informed by Philip Adams’ book, Not in OUR Nameand focuses on the ‘legacy of those who fought against conscription and war in World War One’.

Mark Stephenson said: “Tom and I couldn’t shake off the cover image of Not in OUR Nameand that became the basis for our artwork for the Museum. We share a healthy distrust of the war machine and with a fondness for football, we arrived at these pieces from our interest in propaganda, protest and the Swansea potteries. It felt like a natural next step to invite Philip to come and speak as part of the Now the Hero/Now For Moreprogramme of events for 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts commission for the First World War centenary. I have seen Philip speak on the subject of conscientious objection previously and I know our audience will find his research fascinating, and his talk both passionate and engaging.“

The author’s books will be available to purchase on the night at a substantial discount and the event will be followed by a Plant Based Pop Up Kitchen, by Creative Bubble’s artist in residence Nazma Botanica, at the nearby Swansea Wellbeing Centre on Walter Road from 8.30pm.
